The Final Lutheran Wedding At This 125 Year-Old Country Church

Lisa and Riley’s Lutheran wedding was the last one that will ever be held at the 125 year-old St Peter’s Church near Ponoka, Alberta. And they made the most of it, holding their ceremony in the tiny country church with pews and balcony overflowing with family and friends.

Getting ready at the family farm

Farming has always played a huge part of Lisa’s life, and she made it clear early on that the same would have to be true for her husband. Riley also has a farming background, and was working at John Deere as a mechanic when he met Lisa.

Lisa and Riley decided they would both get ready at home, with her upstairs and him downstairs. This was great, as it simplified travel and logistics for the day. Being a little traditional, they didn’t want to see each other before their ceremony. Fortunately, the home was big enough to make sure this was the case.

A Lutheran Wedding Ceremony

St Peter’s Lutheran Church is situated in the country, about 20 miles north-east of Ponoka. It was quite obvious that the church has been lovingly cared for in its 125 year history. Diane Rose of Rose Creations had also done an amazing job of decorating it.

Setting up for the ceremony was a bit of a challenge. Did we mention St Peter’s is tiny? The church pews and balcony were filled to overflowing. We like to roll 3 cameras for ceremonies whenever possible, to ensure we get good shots of the bride and groom as well as the overall scene. Fortunately, modern cameras and tripods are small enough for tighter spaces.

Ponoka Farm Wedding

Creative Wedding Video and Barn Kittens

Lisa and Riley wanted to visit a few local farms, including their own, to capture some creative video footage and photos with their wedding party after the ceremony. We started with family photos in the shade of some trees near the church. This is the photographer’s show and usually time is limited to get everyone in, so we don’t interfere. Typically we just film some of the action behind the scenes and a few of the family setups.

From there it was off to a beautiful farm belonging to friends of the couple. As is usually the case after a formal ceremony, everything was fun and relaxed. The only hiccup was that we discovered that a clutch of 10 or so barn kittens had taken a liking to the shade under our car. And they didn’t want to leave! We the help of the farm’s children to get them all out to safety before we drove off.

Filming the Wedding Reception in Ponoka

Creative session complete, it was off to Ponoka and the Stagecoach Lounge for the wedding reception. Located at the Ponoka Stampede grounds, we had previously filmed Sam and Vince’s wedding at the same venue in 2019. As was the case then, Diane Rose and her team had done an amazing job of making the room look incredible. As wedding videographers, we always appreciate a beautiful backdrop for our couples!
