Andrea and Troy’s wedding film, held on a hot summer day in Medicine Hat, Alberta. They both describe themselves as “quirky” and apparently that extended to their rehearsal, where Troy made a few modifications to his vows on the fly. Not personal vows, mind you, but the official ones read to him by Mike Leist, pastor at his childhood church. Which got Andrea a little worried. Would Troy do the same thing at their actual wedding?
A Mid-Summer’s Medicine Hat Wedding
Troy and Andrea wanted a big wedding where they could invite all of their family and friends. But with ongoing restrictions through 2020 and then again in 2021, it seemed like it would never happen. And then – for a brief moment – things opened up in Alberta. With only a few months notice Andrea and Troy started organizing a big event. Bigger than anything seen in the past two years. A risk? For sure. But they hoped it would pay off.
Although we’re principally Calgary wedding videographers, and film mostly in the city and Banff area, we’ve also filmed a number of weddings over the years in Medicine Hat. It’s a beautiful prairie city in South-Eastern Alberta situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. The Cypress Hills are nearby, and for a while Andrea and Troy had contemplated a reception there, but the venue didn’t work out. So a wedding in the city it was going to be.
Getting Ready and Ceremony
With the ceremony taking place in the ballroom of the Homestay Inn and Suites, Troy chose to get ready in his hotel room. Andrea got ready at a nearby home in the city. Smoke from very distant forest fires in BC and Saskatchewan resulted in a hazy but very hot summer day, so we were thankful for the indoor ceremony and air conditioning.
As expected, Troy did take a small liberty with his vows, but perhaps not nearly so much as Andrea had feared. Just enough to show a little of his personality. Family photos followed in the same room as the hotel staff cleared everything in preparation for the evening’s wedding reception. Meanwhile, we headed off with the photographers and the wedding party for a creative session at a few spots in Medicine Hat.
Photo and Video Around Medicine Hat
The photographers started with bridal party photos in a field and outside a small commercial, brick building near the hotel. Thankfully, Andrea and Troy had arranged for an air conditioned bus and plenty of refreshments. In general, for purposes of the video we let the photographers run this part of the day as it is mostly their show. We do have shots we like to set up with the bride and groom, so with often limited time available we usually limit ourselves to those.
Once finished at the first location, we headed into the heart of Medicine Hat and a beautiful old neighbourhood overlooking the city. Historic homes and street lined with old trees allowed us to get some nice, intimate footage of the couple together. We also took advantage of the overview for some more epic shots. Then we headed down to the river valley to capture some more video of Troy, Andrea, and their friends.
An Actual Reception! With Guests!
For most of the past year and a half, we’d been filming elopements and smaller, more intimate weddings. Sometimes this was by choice. But often the couple had no choice but to scale back plans for a larger affair. Andrea and Troy felt they could wait, and fortunately for them the easing of restrictions meant they got to have the big wedding they’d wanted.
So it was a bit of a shock to see a ballroom full of people again, enjoying each other’s company, a great meal, and some emotional speeches. And finally, a big dance party!
